Developing a Management Curriculum for a Cytotechnology Training Program.
Miller, Maureen E.
This study reviewed the literature in the field of health care management, particularly that which pertains to the management of the clinical laboratory. The research cited should help cytotechnology educators in planning a management curriculum and developing program objectives to train cytotechnologists in management. The report is an annotated review of literature in four sections, each of which has several subsections. The first section is a general category that contains examples of management training for medical technology students and all-purpose texts that cover most areas of laboratory management. The second section includes material requirements in the cytology laboratory, quality control, and fire and safety procedures. In the third section, the following types of materials are reviewed: management tools, communication, interviews and appraisals, and discipline and counseling. The fourth section reviews materials on Management by Objectives, management styles, staffing and workload, and planning and budgeting. (The literature cited reflects the type of management--positive discipline and participative management--practiced at the South Bend Medical Foundation where the management curriculum was originally written.)
