This report contains the average verbal, mathematical, and combined Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores for several racial/ethnic groups for the nine-year period from 1976 through 1984. The study specifically identifies the following racial/ethnic groups: American Indians, Blacks, Mexican Americans, Orientals, Puerto Ricans, and Whites. It is the first time such data has been arranged on a state-by-state basis. The report is designed to provide information to the educational community concerning progress of students over time. Racial/ethnic data may be used by teachers, administrators, parents' groups, and those concerned with the legislative process to highlight differential attainment of particular groups. The data may also be used to identify educational and financial remedies to correct the balance. All student demographic information is self-reported as part of the process of registering for the Admissions Testing Program. (DWH)
