Project CAPABLE: Model Unit.
Madawaska School District, ME.
Project CAPABLE (Classroom Action Program: Aim: Basic Learning Effectiveness) is a classroom approach which integrates the basic learning skills with content. The goal of the project is to use basic learning skills to enhance the learning of content and at the same time use the content to teach basic learning skills. This manual illustrates how the Classroom Action Program exercises might be used to develop a work unit that integrates basic learning skills and content. A model unit is presented which was written for a sophomore biology course using the text "Modern Biology," by James H. Otto, Albert Towle, and Myra E. Madnick, "Chapter Six: Photosynthesis, Respiration, and Cell Energy." Examples for 20 program components, or "pearls," are given. Classroom Action Program techniques must be chosen to best suit the course; student needs; and the teacher's style, background, and expertise. (BS)
