How to Be a Guardian.
Hillsborough Community Coll., Tampa, FL.; University of South Florida, Tampa. Suncoast Gerontology Center.; Hillsborough County Guardianship Committee, Tampa, FL.
Designed to promote and facilitate educational opportunities at the local level for prospective guardians, this manual outlines a model course to introduce the concept of guardianship to persons interested in serving as legal guardians. First, introductory material describes the purpose, content, and development of the model course. Next, a course description states the general course objectives and provides an overview of the eight course sessions, which are: (1) Introduction to Guardianship and Using Volunteers as Guardians; (2) Legal Issues in Guardianship; (3) Medical Aspects of Guardianship; (4) Psychiatric Aspects of Guardianship; (5) Special Topics, including guardianship for developmentally disabled, children and adolescents, and substance abusers; (6) Designing and Implementing a Care Plan for the Ward; (7) Duties of the Guardian; and (8) a wrap-up, problem-solving session. A detailed outline is then provided for each of the sessions. The manual includes a description of the Volunteer Guardian Program of Lutheran Ministries of Florida; a course evaluation form; Florida State regulations concerning guardianship; a fact sheet on senile dementia; and a bibliography.
