Report on Information Systems Workshop (Njiro Hill, Arusha, Tanzania, May 19-31, 1980).

With a view to improving information systems and services in Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa, this Information Systems Workshop was organized by the East and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) with assistance from the Coordinating Centre for Regional Information Training (CRIT). The specific aims of the workshop were to acquaint the 26 participants with the various concepts of information systems and services; to familiarize the participants with the latest techniques in information technology for collection, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of information; and to assist participants in understanding the organization and administration of information services. The workshop report comprises the following lectures: (l) "Conceptual Foundations of Information Theory" (Francis Inganji); (2) "Information Analysis: Indexing and Retrieval" (Augustine Musana); (3) "Communication of Information" (Francis Inganji); (4) "Information Analysis: Classification Systems and Thesaurus" (Ulrich Gehrke); (5) "Case Study--Indexing" (Ulrich Gehrke); (6) "The Role of Information in Decision Making" (Martin Shio); (7) "Acquisition and Processing of Documentary and Other Sources of Information" (Augustine Musana); (8) "Introduction to Information Systems and Services" (Francis Inganji); (9) a sample of a questionnaire on information and documentation facilities; and (10) "Records Management" (Francis Inganji). A glossary, a bibliography, KWIC Index example, evaluation questionnaire, evaluation comment, and list of participants are appended. (THC)
