An Analysis of Supplemental Resources for the Teaching of Latin in Secondary Schools.
Smith, Cynthia L.
Supplemental instructional and reading materials for secondary level Latin instruction are classified, annotated, and evaluated. Most are produced by individual instructors for their own use and published in newsletters, classical journals, or conference reports. Categories of materials include: narrative texts, poetic texts, dialogues and dramas, games and puzzles, graphics, worksheets and activities, and miscellaneous. Each entry is annotated concerning the item's contents, and evaluated both objectively on the complexity of the grammar and vocabulary used, and subjectively on its effectiveness in accomplishing its purpose. Standard grade-level proficiency criteria are used for the objective evaluation. In addition, each teaching aid is evaluated in terms of its cultural relevance: whether its content is primarily historical or contemporary. The subjective evaluation is concerned with whether the material is primarily instructional, covering a specific grammatical point, or motivational, i.e., designed for the student's enjoyment. It is concluded that although the materials included are plentiful, much more is needed, as are a standardized system of classification and evaluation and a permanent record of materials available.
