QUAL*PRO: Computer Assistance for Qualitative Methods in Intercultural Communication Research.
Blackman, Bernard I.; Provencher, David
Qualitative methodology, the traditional mainstay of social science and historical research, is currently gaining increased respectability as both an alternative and a companion to quantitative methods in intercultural communication research. Because data collection and compilation techniques are often highly personal, situation-specific, expensive in terms of both time and money, and infrequently reported in journals, the subjectivity and generalizability of results are often in question. While computers are a recognized tool for facilitating quantitative research, they have not been used often with qualitative methodologies. A computer program, QUAL*PRO, was developed to facilitate the management of data collected from interviews and participant observation in an intercultural communication study. QUAL*PRO, which consists of three interdependent programs--a training program and two core information storage and retrieval programs--simplifies the clerical functions of collection, organization, storage, and retrieval of data while protecting the natural quality of the data. With this program, data manipulation becomes faster, more standardized, more focused, and more economical. In addition, the increased accessibility of the researcher's interpretative data processing has important implications for the reporting of data, subjectivity of the process, and overall quality of research. (Samples of the QUAL*PRO program products and an abbreviated user's guide are appended.) (Author/FL)
