Family Life Education Curriculum for Pre-Adolescents.
Miller, Marcia W., Comp.
A curriculum on family life and human sexuality for Grades 5-9 which attempts to deal with both facts and emotions was developed in the Mount Vernon Public Schools (New York). The raising of self esteem and the development of personal and social skills are focused on throughout. The following topics are covered in 12 separate units: (1) positive personhood; (2) puberty changes; (3) about boys; (4) about girls; (5) human reproduction and pregnancy; (6) birth, babies, and parenting; (7) families; (8) sex roles; (9) values, decisions, and life goals; (10) communication; (11) relationships; (12) problems and solutions. Each unit is composed of three components: (1) a unit plan (a description of desired outcomes, an overview of concepts, relevant factual information, and a vocabulary list); (2) a lesson outline (listing tactics for motivating students and organizing lessons); and (3) evaluation procedures or tests (sample quizzes and attitude surveys). Following suggestions to the teacher for using the curriculum, a bibliography, a resource list, and lesson overview outlines are presented, with information on materials and time necessary to carry out each lesson.
