Background readings and project ideas to involve elementary and secondary school students in fundraising for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty are provided. Materials can be divided into two sections. The first section, background readings, contains President Ronald Reagan's opening remarks at the ceremony introducing the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Centennial Commission; "Lady Liberty Needs You," an address to students from commission chairman Lee Iacocca; a statement of support from the National Education Advisory Committee; background goals of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation; a history of the Statue of Liberty; and a history of Ellis Island and its role in immigration. The second section contains activity ideas for several subject areas and guidelines on how to set up a Liberty Centennial school or association campaign. Additional information includes a bibliography, a list of members of the National Education Advisory Committee, a chart of the Statue of Liberty restoration plans, and Statue of Liberty vital statistics.
