A 1977 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) survey gathered information and documentation on remote storage for selected library materials, including type and size of facilities, selection processes for transferring materials, operating procedures, and record-changing activities. A summary of the survey results included in this kit reports findings on facilities, characteristics of compact storage collections, selection of materials, public services, and staffing and costs. The kit also contains: (1) general information and descriptions from The Council on Library Resources and University of California at Berkeley; (2) planning documents from Washington University, Princeton University, and Cornell University; (3) general procedures documents from Princeton University, University of Pittsburgh, Washington University, and McMaster University; (4) selection procedures documents from University of California at Davis, Cornell University, and Washington State University; and (5) a retrieval procedures document from Pittsburgh University. The introduction provides a concise summary of issues and trends related to remote storage which covers general advantages and disadvantages, physical facilities, bibliographic records and choice of stored materials, and user access.
