Assessing School Climate: An Attitudinal Analysis Approach.
Johnson, William L.; Nussbaum, Claire
This study describes one type of analysis used to gather data on attitudinal climate in elementary schools. The Quality of School Life Scale (QSL) was administered to 142 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in one southwestern elementary school. Responses to the QSL were analyzed using statistical and nonstatistical techniques. The data results are so massive that general trends are not clearly apparent. The report includes a delineation of the scoring procedure and data analysis of the QSL responses. In addition, the data were subjected to a factor analysis, which analyzed specific psychometric properties of the QSL. The researchers suggest revisions of the QSL as well as modifications of the actual scoring of the instrument. When all the school climate data from this study were viewed together, there appeared to be a problem with authoritarianism in the school being studied. This problem could be symptomatic of a system that does not allow teachers or students much choice in how learning is conducted. The report offers a recommendation for implementing a systematic method of teacher input into school policy and includes six tables and three appendixes. (MD)
