Special Needs of Persons with Handicaps: A Guidebook for Church Leaders.
Hawkins-Shepard, Charlotte, Ed.
Written during the International Religious Year of Persons with Disabilities, 1983, three papers address ways in which places of worship can become accessible for persons with disabilities. Wallace K. Babington presents a question and answer format in "Responding to the Needs of Persons with Handicaps." The article emphasizes the need to include the handicapped person (adult or child) in the ongoing life of the church community. Diane H. Huddle follows with "What Disabled Persons and Their Families Wished Their Clergy Knew," in which she focuses on attitudes and counseling approaches. Bruce O. Boston, in "Access for Persons with Handicaps," concludes the booklet with an examination of such facility and design needs as sensory aids, space for wheelchair seating, accessible (and specially fitted) restrooms, and lighting.
