Residency Patterns and Secondary Migration of Refugees: A State of the Information Paper.
Forbes, Susan
This paper synthesizes available research regarding the residence patterns of refugees in the United States. Information is presented on both initial placement and secondary migration. The first section traces the evolution of U.S. policy and outcomes from 1945 to the start of the Indochinese resettlement program in 1975. The second section focuses on residence patterns of the 1975 Indochinese arrivals and the third section deals with refugees who have arrived since 1979. Official policies regarding placement, placement outcomes, and secondary migration patterns are outlined for both time periods, and the experiences of refugees are compared with those of other U.S. populations. The fourth and final section presents conclusions and recommendations for future refugee resettlement policy and practices. (CMG)
