Teaching about Ethics and the Environment.

This unit consists of activities designed to develop value systems related to the interactions of humans and their environment. The overall objectives are to teach students to evaluate their actions within an environmental context, make rational decisions in resolving environmental problems, and function in a democratic society by reaching consensus on environmental issues. Activities focus on: (1) reading the essay, "Ethics of a Savage," which sets the terms of an environmental ethic; (2) problems with wood burning stoves; (3) environmental decision-making (a values auction activity addressing various environmental issues); (4) comparing societies; (5) United States energy sources; (6) making choices in our society; (7) energy consumption; (8) life styles and the future; (9) evolution of ethics; and (10) constructing a life plan. The unit is designed for use as homework or for individual assignments. (JN)
