Micros on Campus: Policy Issues. Current Issues Forum.
Policies on microcomputers are presented for four colleges. For Clemson University, purchasing computer hardware and software is addressed. Attention is directed to obtaining approval for purchasing hardware and the policy regarding connecting terminals and modems. Eight steps required for obtaining computers are listed, including those relevant to sole source procurement. The installation of new software, engineering support, and contract programming are also briefly considered. Next, Miami-Dade Community College's procedures for the purchase of microcomputer programs and equipment to support instructional and administrative programs are identified. Procedures for the repair of microcomputers are also covered. An overview is provided of Oberlin College's acquisition and support of microcomputers. A critical factor in the success of the effort is noted: the early realization that user interaction and self-help is an essential element. Finally, policy, procedures, and practices regarding microcomputers at Virginia Tech University are discussed. In addition to briefly discussing hardware and software, attention is directed to approval for microcomputers for students, departments, and computer laboratories. Support for microcomputers on campus is also considered. (SW)
