A Resource Manual for the Development and Evaluation of Special Programs for Exceptional Students. Volume III-E: Alternative Communication Systems for Non-Vocal Students.
Orange County Public Schools, Orlando, FL.
Part of a series on special education procedures in Florida, the manual presents a multidisciplinary perspective on matching the most effective communication device to the nonvocal/unintelligible learner. The approach reflects the thinking of parent educators, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and physical therapists. Information was gathered and analyzed on the evaluation of 24 students (3-15 years old) using the devices, and on seven communication systems (each of which is described in terms of step by step operation, size, portability, interfaces, accessories, ease of operation, cleaning, and durability). A variety of switch systems is also reviewed. Analysis of student use on each system is then presented, and minimum criteria (sensory, motor, language) for use are presented in the final section.
