How to Read a Collegiate Dictionary.
Canavan, Diane D.
Intended for use with both elementary and secondary school students, the activity pages and information in this booklet are designed to make the collegiate dictionary entry less confusing and more usable. The activities in the booklet help students (1) locate entry words by using guide words and alphabetizing; (2) read dictionary pronunciation symbols; (3) read dictionary abbreviations, including parts of speech and status labels; (4) read the etymology of a word; (5) choose the right definition; (6) find the precise meaning of various synonyms; and (7) use dictionary spelling helps. The booklet contains a pretest/posttest and a table of contents for locating the teaching suggestions and the student practice pages for each skill area. A section with additional vocabulary activities is also included. (Author/HOD)
