Preschool Library Experience and Reading Readiness.
Tomko, Diane Marie
To assess the impact of public library preschool activities on children's reading readiness skills, a criterion reference test of reading readiness development was administered to 106 children entering kindergarten. Questionnaires were given to both parents and children to determine their uses and views of the library in their town. Comparison of the test scores and the questionnaires indicated that children who used the library scored higher on the reading readiness test and had a more positive view of the library than children who did not use the library. The study suggested that children with library experience demonstrated greater reading readiness than children without this experience. (Appendixes include parent and children questionnaires, and questionnaire and test results.) (Author/MM)
