The responsibilities and functioning of an academic affairs committee of a college governing board are described. It is noted that the responsibilities of the academic affairs committee involve monitoring the relationship between mission and strategy in the academic realm. The following responsibilities of the committee are discussed: the educational program is consistent with institutional mission and strategy, the academic budget reflects academic priorities, faculty personnel policies and procedures are equitable and supportive of academic priorities, academic programs are appropriate to the institution's students, and the quality of academic activities is evaluated. The staffing and agenda for the committee and the committee's access to information are also considered. The specific issue of whether to appoint nonvoting faculty or student members to the committee is addressed, along with the role of the institution's chief academic officer, and typical agenda items.
