The Research on Higher Education Program. Swedish Research on Higher Education, 1983-1.
Bjorklund, Eskil
The Swedish National Board of Universities and Colleges' research on higher education program is discussed. The program's primary aim is to encourage discussion of the content, form, and effect of higher education activities. After outlining the distinctive properties and values of the program, the following main content areas of research are identified: higher education in society, the organization of higher education, and the conditions and potentialities of research and education. In addition, examples of questions that are being studied are discussed: (1) division of labor, professionalization, and specialization, (2) higher education traditions, research, and education ideologies, (3) the conditions and environment of research and research training, and (4) sectoral research. Information is also provided on how resources have been distributed between problem areas and the shifts in the involvement of the various disciplines. It is suggested that the research program is developing more coherent and deeper knowledge concerning the tasks of higher education, its internal life, and its function in society. A bibliography of the program's 1982-1983 publications and a list of current projects, both grouped by main content area, are included. (SW)
