Special Needs in Education (E241): Family Views, Unit 3.
Thomas, Davis; Swann, Will
The fourth of 16 booklets designed for use in an Open University course about education for handicapped children in the United Kingdom, this document focuses on family life, particularly in families with severely handicapped children. Parents' reactions to the initial diagnosis of their child's handicapping condition are discussed, as well as the practical problems and social isolation facing families with handicapped children, and subsequent stresses within the family system. Family resources, including practical and financial help, short term care, advisory and teaching services, and self-help groups for parents are described. Parent-school relationships are explored, as are areas of responsibility between parents and professionals. Reading assignments and activities are offered throughout. (CL)
