Designed to help teachers encourage positive student attitudes toward reading on their own, this guide provides a developmental reading framework to introduce students to books beyond the basal series and to enhance reading motivation. Following an introduction, the guide covers the following subjects: (1) goals and objectives for both teachers and students, (2) scheduling nonbasal reading experiences, (3) forming student reading groups, (4) selecting and obtaining books (includes a brief annotated list of suggested books), (5) teacher preparation, (6) lesson format, and (7) student activities. An appendix includes a sample letter to parents explaining the program, and a list of relevant audiovisual materials. (HTH)
