The Vietnamese: The Challenge of Sponsorship. World Relief Ethnic Profile.
Li, Gertraude Roth
This paper provides information to American families who are interested in sponsoring Vietnamese refugees resettling in the United States. It traces the conditions that resulted in the coming of Vietnamese to this country following the end of American involvement in the Indochinese war and the subsequent unification of North and South Vietnam under a communist government. Misconceptions that many Vietnamese hold upon arrival in the United States--particularly, inflated expectations regarding financial aid--are described, and ways that sponsors can redress these misconceptions are outlined. The paper suggests that sponsors become acquainted with Vietnamese refugees. Briefly discussed are interpersonal and family relationships, mental and physical health, work attitudes, schooling, welfare, religion, privacy, gifts, hospitality, language, and the interpretation of gestures.
