A Public Dissemination Plan of Test Results and Application of Testing to Improvement of Instruction.
Robinson, Carol; O'Neal, Sandra
To combat negative press reports concerning schools and test scores, the Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) Public Information Office (PIO) and the Department of Instructional Research, Testing, and Evaluation (IRTE) developed a dissemination plan geared toward informing the public about testing. Designed to include both test scores and information about testing as an instructional tool, the plan involves the production and distribution of testing reports in the form of newspaper inserts. The reports (called "APS In Action") are jointly written and edited by IRTE and the PIO, and distributed to citizens as an insert in the Sunday Albuquerque Journal. The insert provides answers to questions on testing, an editorial by the superintendent, information on how to prepare for tests, and a calendar of major testing dates. Results from state assessment tests and college entrance examinations are included. Press conferences precede the release of the special testing issues of "APS In Action" by several days. It is felt that the Albuquerque community has developed a better understanding of the testing program and the strengths and weaknesses of testing as well as a better attitude toward schools in general.
