What Did You Learn in School Today? A Comprehensive Guide to Getting the Best Possible Education for Your Children.
Baron, Bruce; And Others
Intended as an aid to parents concerned with their children's educational progress, this guidebook provides information about schools and subject matter, offers advice on numerous topics related to education from birth through the twelfth grade, and suggests activities parents can implement at home to assess achievement and improve school performance in their children. The first chapter focuses on the preschool years, providing lists of activities parents can do with infants, toddlers, and young children to promote mental, physical, and social development. Several aspects of choosing and participating in nursery schools and kindergarten are discussed. The brief second chapter provides advice on establishing an effective parent/teacher relationship. Constituting the largest part of the book, chapters 3, 4, and 5 respectively take up issues related to academic achievement in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Each of these three chapters provides materials parents can use to assess their children's achievement and offers suggestions for helping children who are having problems. Chapter 6 provides advice about communicating with children who are having difficulty at school. The concluding chapter provides a dictionary of 17 educational terms ranging from "accountability" to "tuition tax credit." A bibliography cites books and articles related to the contents of most chapters. (RH)
