Results of an updated survey on the basic legal structures and responsibilities of state coordinating or governing agencies and public institutional governing boards are presented. The data cover the 50 states and the District of Columbia as of January 1, 1983. For each state, information is presented on the following: (1) the structure of the statewide, or central, coordinating/governing boards; (2) the basic responsibilities of these agencies; (3) the structure of both the central (statewide) coordinating and/or governing boards and the public institutional and multicampus governing boards; and (4) the statewide agency responsible for the administration and allocation of federal funds under the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (including six federal programs). The third section contains the following information: the legal bases, number of institutions, and number of full- and part-time staff; the number of board members, whether elected or appointed, and the representation and term of office for those appointed; and the number of student and faculty members on these boards, their manner of appointment, whether statutory, voting or nonvoting, and term of office.
