Developing Community Awareness.
Tesseneer, Susan Wyman
Members of a college community were surveyed to assess their awareness of the international student population at the local college. The questionnaire was administered by interview to each of 25 representatives of selected local civic groups in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The twofold purpose of the survey was to assess community awareness of foreign students as well as to create such awareness through the act of conducting the survey. The questionnaire addressed the respondents' perceptions of demographic characteristics of international students at Western Kentucky University and of the services available to the students. The results were interpreted in terms of the degree of accuracy of the responses. A low level of accuracy of respondents' perceptions was found, indicating a low level of community awareness regarding international students. Suggestions are made for following up on the interest expressed by community participants by encouraging the involvement of civic groups in activities related to international students. (RW)
