Teaching Handicapped Children: A Resource Guide for Classroom Teachers.
Lister, Bob; Hnatiuk, Vic
Intended for regular education teachers of mainstreamed handicapped students, the booklet offers nontechnical information about dealing with children who have a variety of disabilities. A brief introduction traces the evolution of society's attitudes and school practices involving handicapped students. The second unit contains definitions, information on developmental and learning characteristics, and suggested teaching strategies for the following disabilities: mental retardation, learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, visual impairments, hearing impairments, orthopedic handicaps, developmental disabilities, and child abuse and neglect. A section on student assessment and evaluation covers formal and informal measures, readiness testing, tests of intellectual functioning, and diagnosis of learning disabilities. The final section presents a glossary of approximately 60 terms and a brief bibliography. (CL)
