Truancy Reduction: "The Hooky Handbook."
California State Office of the Attorney General, Sacramento. School Safety Center.
Ways in which schools, law enforcement agencies and communities can work together to develop strategies to effectively reduce truancy are provided in this handbook. Areas covered include: (1) a definition of truancy; (2) a truant profile; (3) strategies for dealing with a truant; (4) suggestions for components of truancy reduction programs; and (5) brief descriptions of student-centered, discipline-oriented and support programs. Sections of the California Education Code are often cited when describing procedure and policy. Five pages describe the structure and intent of the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) and provide a flow chart showing the steps and departments involved in processing a referral. A summary of California Assembly Bill 3269 (Hart) and a truancy case decision appear in the appendices. (JW)
