Development of Instructional Resource Guides for Competency-Based Education in Selected Industrial Arts Areas. Final Report.
Thomas Nelson Community Coll., Hampton, VA.
A project was conducted in Virginia to develop a coordinated, articulated, competency-based curriculum for selected industrial arts areas from an identified common core of competencies. The competencies would include a set of performance objectives, a set of criterion-referenced measures, and a set of instructional resource guides in the industrial arts program areas of basic technical drawing, engineering drawing, and architectural drawing. A committee of teachers from participating high schools developed the instructional resource guides through the following procedures: (1) developed a first draft in the state-approved format; (2) field tested the first drafts; (3) evaluated the effectiveness of the instructional resource guides through evaluation instruments; (4) met with project supervisors on the procedures for final editing of the guides; (5) edited and finalized the instructional resource guides in the state-approved guide format; and (6) typed and submitted the final copies of the instructional resource guides to the State Department of Education. A field test of the guides was successful, and the guides are now being used at the targeted schools. Recommendations were made to follow up students after the program has been in operation for 1 year and for the state to establish procedures to develop additional guides. (KC)
