The Supreme Court's Impact on Public Education.

This volume presents an analysis and synthesis of the opinions of the Supreme Court explaining judgments that have directly decided education matters and those that have had substantial impact on public education policies and procedures even though the parties to the suits were not connected with public education. The chapters are structured thematically to highlight, in an integrated fashion, the main thrusts of the Supreme Court opinions. The cases within each area are usually presented in chronological order. Four chapters cover issues on teacher rights (the loyalty turmoil, expression and due process, conditions of employment, and discriminatory employment practices); three chapters describe cases on race and education; and two chapters concern financial aid for parochial schools. A single chapter is devoted to each of the following subjects: financial aid for secular private schools, religious influences in public schools, student rights, liability for civil rights violation, structure and finance of school districts, and federal legislation affecting education. A glossary, key provisions of the United States Constitution, and key federal statutory provisions are in the appendixes. A table of cases and an index complete the book. (MLF)
