A Practical Guide to the Teaching of English as a Second or Foreign Language.
Rivers, Wilga M.; Temperley, Mary S.
This text, designed for future teachers of English as a second or foreign language, considers language teaching methodology in the light of recent research in psychology and linguistics. Many aspects of language learning that contribute to effective language use are discussed: oral communication, pronunciation, grammar instruction, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and writing. The chapters in the first section on communicating deal with structured interaction, autonomous interaction, listening, oral practice for the learning of grammar, and teaching the sound system. The chapters in the second section on the written word discuss purposes and procedures for reading, from dependence to independence in reading, the nuts and bolts of written exercises, and flexibility and expression in writing. Each chapter begins with a theoretical discussion that is immediately followed by numerous examples and practical exercises. Tables of phonemic symbols and transcribing alphabets are appended along with an extensive bibliography. (NCR)
