Addressing Domestic Violence: A Guide for School Personnel.
New York State Education Dept., Albany.
This booklet was developed to guide school pesonnel who come into contact with pupils who need help because of violence in their homes. It provides information on spouse abuse and its effects on children, suggests ways for school personnel to educate students about the problem, and promotes the use of local service agencies designed to assist violent families. Programs developed in New York are described, including telephone hotlines and emergency shelters. The paper defines the role of the educational system and presents guidelines to help school personnel recognize clues to family violence and confront the issue. An annotated bibliography is included which can be used to develop curriculum and in-service education programs. Although some of the material is geographically specific, the booklet provides a useful, general introduction for school personnel. (JAC)
