Educator's Guide to Teaching Auto and Home Insurance.
Campbell, Sally R.
Secondary students in consumer education, general business, and home and family living courses can learn about auto and home insurance by participating in these learning activities. The exercises can also be used in adult education courses. The type of information provided for the activities includes key concepts, objectives, generalizations, new vocabulary, and the learning activities. In many of the activities students are presented with a situation with which they must deal. For example, "Your home has burned to the ground. Everything is destroyed. Your homeowner's policy covers your losses up to the limits stated in the policy." Suggestions for inquiry include having students list all household furnishings and personal possessions in their home and call an insurance agent to learn what assistance they would get in filing a claim and how long it would take to get a settlement. Students also investigate and report on different types of insurance, debate topics, do research, and listen to guest speakers. The guide concludes by citing sources of information on property and liability insurance and describing educational materials available from the Insurance Information Institute. (RM)
