Twenty-four biographical sketches of women in scientific professions are included in this COMETS Profiles package. Each biography relates to a science topic dealt with in one of the instructional modules of COMETS Science (Career Oriented Modules to Explore Topics in Science). The purpose of these materials is to demonstrate to early adolescents that learning mathematics and science concepts can have payoff in a wide variety of careers and to encourage early adolescent students, especially girls, to consider science-related careers. In addition to the biography, each COMETS Profiles unit contains follow-up language arts activities which have been written directly to students, to facilitate their use in learning centers and independent study formats. However, the materials can also be adapted for use with the total class. Four types of language arts activities are included with each unit: (1) recall/comprehension questions (titled Content Quiz); (2) vocabulary study words (Words to Know); (3) suggestions for research and writing (Ideas for Writing); and (4) topics for creative projects (Ideas for Projects). A test tube symbol in Ideas for Projects indicates activities from COMETS Science particularly appropriate for that COMETS Profiles unit. (Author/JN)
