This National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Yearbook shows how NCTM's recommendations for improving mathematics education--contained in the booklet, An Agenda for Action--are being implemented in schools. The 27 articles are grouped under 8 headings, corresponding to the 8 recommendations in the Agenda. The articles apply to all levels of mathematics teaching from kindergarten through teacher education. Section 1 has a general article on problem solving, followed by articles giving specific suggestions on teaching problem solving. Section 2 includes a variety of articles illustrating that teaching basics means more than practicing computation. Section 3 shows some ideas for incorporating calculators and computers in mathematics instruction. In section 4 are examples of instructional strategies and activities that promote an effective learning environment. Section 5 describes new approaches to evaluating mathematics students and interpreting test results. Section 6 reports promising attempts to implement a more flexible curriculum in mathematics. Section 7 looks ahead to what the next decade may hold in store for the teaching profession. Finally, section 8 takes into account how necessary public support is in assuring that the Agenda has a long-lasting effect. (MNS)
