Strategies for the Improvement of School Management. The Internal Review--The External Review.
Lennon, Gale G.
To help educational administrators, this guide offers strategies and instruments for performing an internal review of school district management. It also provides guidelines for external reviews and briefly mentions followup procedures. After discussing the purposes and uses of school management reviews, the author identifies 32 types of historical and current data to be collected for an internal review and provides 21 sample data collection instruments, involving such areas as the governing board, administrative turnover, pupil-teacher ratios, dropout rates, test scores, ethnic composition, finances, courses, and enrollment. The author also adds a rating sheet on administrators' philosophy and procedures as well as questions analyzing district administration and procedures in 17 areas, including philosophy, objectives, nondiscrimination, task analysis, responsibilities, communication, inservice activities, salaries, evaluation, effectiveness, curriculum improvement, and community relations. Two further sets of 13 and 12 questions, respectively, are focused on facilities for district and building administrators. The author's summary of the internal review offers space for identifying areas of improvement and actions to take. The section on external reviews discusses the establishment of an external review committee, areas to review, and committee written and verbal reports. Sample external review committee reports are provided. (RW)
