Business Issues in an Aging America. A Report from The Travelers Insurance Companies Conference, Managing an Aging Workforce (New York, NY, February 1982).
Travelers Insurance Companies, Hartford, CT.
This report consists of excerpts from nine papers presented at a conference on managing an aging workforce. The first excerpt deals with the nature and impact of age-related changes. Discussed next is the need to better identify the changes that come with age and to develop improved methods to assess human capability without respect to age. The effects of aging on behavior, intelligence, job performance, and performance appraisals are examined in three presentations. Outlined next are the benefits to be derived from retaining and promoting older workers. The focus of the next report is on the necessity for shaping new personnel practices for managing an aging workforce. In an article on the importance of fit between people and jobs, evidence is cited to support policies providing for flexibility in the age at which retirement takes place as well as for flexibility in the process by which retirement takes place. Described in the final section of the report are the efforts of the Travelers Insurance Companies to meet the needs of older workers. (MN)
