Parent-Teacher Relations: A Self-Help Guide to Improved Communications.
Burchby, Marcia; And Others
This guide, written by Marcia Burchby, Ralph Martin, and George Wood, for improving relations between teachers and parents emphasizes that the onus of bringing about better relations and clearer lines of communication falls upon the teacher. In the first part, six key questions offer guidelines for introspective examination on the part of the teacher. These concern not only the teacher's evaluation of current methods of communications with parents but also reflections on the feelings and attitudes of parents and the general attitude of the school administration toward parent-school relationships. Several findings from the 1982 "l4th Annual Gallup Poll of the Public's Attitudes toward the Public Schools" are presented as an aid for clarifying this evaluative thinking. The second section contains suggestions for improved communications: (1) building a year-long plan; (2) helpful hints for successful parent conferences; (3) communication samples; (4) things to send home besides homework; (5) communicating via a student notebook; and (6) writing communications carefully with proper grammar and spelling. Teachers' ideas and comments are included, as well as a bibliography on parent teacher communications. (JD)
