Provided in this report are descriptions of the sociocultural background of Afghan refugees and other information that may be of use to those involved in sponsoring Afghan refugees in the United States. The report discusses facets of Afghan life and culture, including religion, personal relationships, family structure, and male-female relations; describes differences in Afghan and American lifestyles; and explains Afghan patterns of thinking and behavior that may influence their personal interactions, adjustment to work situations, and ways of dealing with different aspects of life in the United States. The report suggests that American sponsors for Afghan refugees can best deal with adjustment difficulties by understanding Afghan culture and gaining the refugees' trust and friendship. (MJL)
