The Director of Student Teaching/Field Experiences: Characteristics and Responsibilities.

Results of a study to identify characteristics and responsibilities of directors of student teaching and field experience programs are presented and discussed in this document. The survey instrument had 74 items in 10 categories: (1) institutional characteristics; (2) director characteristics; (3) compensation; (4) rank, promotion, and tenure; (5) research and publications; (6) membership and participation in professional organizations; (7) institution program support; (8) work load; (9) job satisfaction; and (10) changes occurring and needed in the field of student teaching. Respondents to the questionnaire represented 284 public, 198 private, and 154 parochial teacher training institutions. Results for each of the ten categories are discussed, and it is noted that the most consistent finding was the inconsistency and diversity of responses. A conclusion points out encouraging and disappointing aspects of the study. In an appendix, responses to each questionnaire item are provided, many of which include representative comments from respondents. (FG)
