Opportunities at Independent Colleges and Universities in New York State Through the Higher Education Opportunity Program.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Bureau of Higher Education Opportunity Programs.
Information on the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), which provides supportive services and financial aid to New York State residents attending colleges and universities in New York State is presented. Students eligible for HEOP will generally rank low on such traditional measures of collegiate admissions as the Standard Aptitude Test board scores, high school average, class standing, or Regents Scholarship examinations. The eligible student would not otherwise be accepted under the institution's normal admissions standards at a matriculated status in a degree program. HEOP eligibility criteria at open admissions institutions are also outlined. Eligibility is also dependent on economically disadvantagement, and guidelines for determining this criteria are included. Students must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and have the potential and motivation for successful completion of college. Information is also presented on applying for admission to the HEOP, and on the summer program and supportive services. Entering students usually are required to participate in a prefreshman summer program designed to orient the student to college life, initiate a program of academic skills building, and acquaint the student with the services available through HEOP. The following supportive services are briefly described: remedial and developmental courses, tutorial services, and counseling. Counseling is available to assist students with academic, personal, career, and financial concerns. A list of participating institutions is included. (SW)
