Functional Communication Competencies: A National Perspective.
Boileau, Don M.
Suggestions for the development of a national perspective on the place of functional communication competencies in the speech communication curriculum are presented in this paper. The first section of the paper describes current trends in functional communication curriculum development, including the theoretical perspectives underlying various interpretations of functional communication, the activities of the Speech Communication Association in this area, and various curriculum development projects recently undertaken across the United States. The second section of the paper provides a framework for integrating functional communication instruction into the speech communication curriculum. (FL)
