The Effect of Retention on Achievement.
Kerzner, Randi L.
A study investigated the educational value of retaining low achieving elementary school students in the same grade for an additional year. Subjects were 56 students who had completed at least one grade level beyond the grade in which they had been retained. The students had each been tested with the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills during the year of retention and during the following year. Results showed that retention was beneficial academically to students in all grades, but that retaining a child in grades one, two, or three was more beneficial than later retention. (FL)
