Better Boards and Committees. Leadership Pamphlet #14.
Adult Education Association of U.S.A., Washington, DC.
This pamphlet on boards and committees is the fourteenth of 16 in a series to provide leaders in adult activities with sound introductory material to give practical help in using a method of adult education or working in a particular area. Its objective is to give practical help to board members and executives on applying democratic principles in the operation of boards and committees. Six articles and how-tos are included. "A Look at Human Organization" places boards and committees in the context of human organization and brings findings of modern social science to bear on development of a better understanding of the human element in organizational life. "Improving Organizational Leadership" presents three case examples of attempts to improve leadership with special attention to the problem of spotting and developing new leadership. A theory article on "Creative Board Leadership" is followed by two practical presentations, "Building Committees That Work" and "The Group at Work," which translate principles of democratic organization into step-by-step procedures for effective committee operation. "Advice on Advisory Committees" discusses their importance, uses and abuses, dangers, and suggestions for organizing and running them. (YLB)
