Report of the Chancellor's Counseling Advisory Committee.
Thurston, Alice
In Fall 1981, a Chancellor's Counseling Advisory Committee was formed in the Los Angeles Community College District to analyze current counseling practices and, with the help of a counseling consultant, make recommendations for improvement. This report first presents summaries of the Committee's deliberations and their recommendations, which were based on a survey of current counseling practices in the district conducted through site visits and semi-structured interviews. The second section of the report presents the recommendations of the counseling consultant, which were based on discussions with college presidents and personnel, data from the survey of current practices, recommendations of the Committee, and conferences with district staff and persons in the field. The recommendations of both the Committee and the consultant focus on the role of the counselor in assisting students to clarify and meet their academic, career, and personal objectives; basic skills assessment on entering college; mandatory placement in particular courses; required college orientation including group academic advisement for entering students; and support services for students intending to transfer. Future steps recommended for the district related to the development of testing instruments, staff development, and an analysis of staffing needs. Extensive appendices provide a summary of interview findings, interview data by college, minutes of committee meetings, and the survey interview form. (HB)
