Guide for Developing an Adaptive Physical Education Curriculum. K-6.
Hess, Jack, Comp.; And Others
Methods and techniques for implementing an adapted physical education program are provided in this guide for elementary physical education teachers. The recommended screening test, "Revised Motor Activity Scale," consists of observable items which are not scored and performance items in three categories which are scored: (1) body awareness and spatial orientation; (2) manual dexterity; and (3) body control. Evaluation activities are described, and the terms used in evaluation are defined. Sample evaluation forms are provided for tracking a student's progress through the evaluation activities. A performance guide that has been used with children aged four to seven is suggested. Examples of materials for recordkeeping and communicating with parents and medical personnel are included. An outline of motor activities focuses on body image, laterality, directionality, figure perception, balance, and dominance. Perceptual and cognitive activities are listed and coded to the types of benefits to be gained. An annotated bibliography of 21 books for educators and parents is appended. (FG)
