Direct Instruction Programs in Special Education Settings: A Review of Evaluation Research Findings.

The paper reviews the state of the art in evaluation research of direct instruction projects with handicapped students. The first section delineates research designs used (including norm referenced comparisons, nonequivalent comparison groups, and quasi experimental designs); major findings; and problems with each. A distinction is made between evaluation research and documentation activities. Documentation is seen to lack the use of comparison standards. The final section examines the definition of the independent variable and considers directions for future research in formative evaluation and instructional dimensions. (CL)
