Historical Status of Elementary Schools in Rural Alaskan Communities, 1867-1979. Preliminary Review Edition.
Designed to present information from scattered sources in an organized and useful way, this report examines the historical status of elementary schools in rural Alaskan communities from 1867 to 1979. Following a summary of the major landmarks in the establishment of the educational system in Alaska, the report furnishes a chronological summary of major educational legislation in Alaska. A discussion concerning the sources of data used in compiling the report's historical information is followed by tables which outline the historical status of elementary schools in rural Alaskan communities. These tables include names of communities in which schools have been established, beginning and ending years of school operation, the operating agency for each school, and special designations concerning each school (on-base school, Johnson-O'Malley school, special school, or contract school). The sources of reference for each school are noted. (CM)
