Fact Sheet on Community, Junior and Technical Colleges.
American Association of Community and Junior Colleges, Washington, DC. Office of Governmental Affairs.
This factsheet provides a composite statistical profile of the 1,049 public and 182 private two-year colleges in the United States, its territories, and Micronesia. The 8.8 million students enrolled in two-year colleges as of Fall 1980 are described in terms of credit/non-credit status, full-/part-time status, employment status, age, sex, and ethnic background. Among other items of information, this section reveals that 4.8 million students were enrolled in credit courses; that 62% of these credit students were enrolled part-time; and that 27% of the part-time and 20% of the full-time students were minorities. The teaching load and educational attainment of the colleges' 238,838 instructors are looked at prior to a review of the colleges' four major curricular areas: vocational programs, transfer education, community education, and developmental instruction. A summary of the colleges' financial status is then presented, detailing averages for tuition, fees, and total student costs; sources of student income; sources of college revenue; the growing dependence on state aid; and the wide range of expenditures per student among states. The factsheet concludes with a discussion of federal aid received by the colleges through student assistance programs, the Vocational Education Act, Title III of the Higher Education Act, and special programs such as the Minority Institutions Science Improvement Program.
